Groundswell Aid is raising money to provide water tanks for Groundswell Gardens

Our goal is to ensure that our community garden in Jeffreys Bay can sustain itself long-term through an ongoing drought…

THE STORY

We are looking to equip our Groundswell Gardens with water tanks as Jeffreys Bay is a water-scarce area currently experiencing a drought.

The Gardens were set-up during the early months of the pandemic, when lockdowns were depriving poor families in Jeffreys Bay of access to food. They produce a crop every 4-8 weeks, depending on what we’re growing. There are three types of crops; fruit veg crop like tomatoes, leafy veg like spinach, and root veg like a radish.

Currently, the garden project is sitting on some 72 boxes that are feeding the local community.

The project has tipped over to its second phase, which is connecting, training and equipping the local community on how to plant, manage and reproduce their own personal gardens. People can elect to take these gardens home once they have completed the training, or they can have them stay onsite in our facility.

Jeffreys Bay is a water-scarce area, and we are starting to generate a burdensome expense in the cost of municipal water to sustain the growing gardens. So we thought we would throw this out to our Groundswell community and see if we can fund a mini project to put in guttering, rain tanks and a pump that will make the project even greener than it already is.
